A weekend in Beaune, hour by hour

48 hours in Beaune: Hospices, Saturday market, cellar tasting, Route des Grands Crus escape. A complete, tested itinerary with the real opening hours.

4 min readUpdated July 2026

Friday evening 6 pm, Beaune station. Sunday evening 7 pm, back to Paris. In between: the Hospices, a producers’ market, two serious tastings, a walk in the vines and two dinners worth the trip. Without a car, or almost.

In brief

Beaune can be done in a weekend. The town fits in an oval of 800 metres by 500, surrounded by medieval ramparts still 80% standing. A direct TGV from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon drops you there in 2 h 05. Two nights on the spot are enough to see the essentials without feeling rushed. On Saturday morning, you take a bike or a car for the Grands Crus loop. The rest is done on foot.

Three mistakes to avoid: arriving after 8 pm on Friday (the cellars are closed), thinking you can visit the Hospices in 30 minutes (allow 1 h 30), and leaving without a good jar of old-style mustard.

This itinerary, May 2026

Friday evening, 6 pm to 11 pm

6:30 pm, arrival and dropping off luggage

From the station, 12 minutes on foot to place Carnot (700 m, all flat). Three accommodation options: Hôtel Le Cep (4★, €220), Hôtel des Remparts (3★, €145), or La Villa Fleurie (guesthouse, €95). All within 400 metres of the square.

7:30 pm, aperitif at the Athenaeum

The best-stocked wine bookshop in Burgundy, with a wine bar at the back, eight wines by the glass selected each week by the manager. Allow €25 for two glasses and a board. 5 rue de l’Hôtel-Dieu.

9 pm, dinner at Bacchus

A winemaker’s bistro, 22 seats, booking essential. €42 menu, changing every week, short wine list but entirely organic and biodynamic. Closed Sunday and Monday. 6 rue de la Boucherie.

Saturday, full day

7:30 am, breakfast at the maison Bourgogne

Bakery-pastry shop open from 6:30 am, place Fleury. AOP butter croissant, espresso, freshly squeezed orange juice. €6.50. Avoid hotels whose breakfast opens at 8 am, you lose an hour at the market.

8 am–12 pm, Halles market + Hospices

The Saturday market is one of the three most beautiful in France. 130 producers, place de la Halle. Do a full tour before buying. Priorities: Fallot green-pepper mustard, goat’s cheese from Le Rocher, marc sausage from the domaine des Terres Blanches, walnut bread from the ferme Charmillon.

Follow with the Hospices de Beaune (rue de l’Hôtel-Dieu, €12, 9 am–6 pm). Allow 1 h 30 at least. Do not miss Van der Weyden’s Last Judgement altarpiece, in the Polyptych room, lit every 20 minutes by a system of mirrors (superb, free once you have paid the entry).

Saturday afternoon, two options

Option A (on foot): climb to the top of the belfry (€5, panorama over the vines), walk on the ramparts (2.2 km, free), break at the parc de la Bouzaize. Back to the hotel.

Option B (with a car or electric bike): Grands Crus loop, 18 km, Beaune → Pommard → Volnay → Meursault → back. Two tastings booked in advance (Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, Domaine Michel Lafarge in Volnay).

8 pm, dinner at Ma Cuisine

Fabienne Escoffier’s bistro, an institution. Single set menu of the day at €38, wine list of 800 references all at wine-merchant price + €15. Book 3 weeks ahead. Passage Sainte-Hélène.

Sunday, morning

9 am, Fallot mustard mill or bike in the vines

The guided tour of the Fallot mustard mill (31 rue du Faubourg-Bretonnière) lasts 1 h 30 and costs €12. Book the day before. Alternative: electric-assist bike rental at Bourgogne Randonnées (€25/day), short loop Beaune–Savigny-lès-Beaune–Pernand-Vergelesses, back, 22 km, 3 hours.

12:30 pm, lunch at the Comptoir des Tontons

Family bistro. Œufs en meurette to start, house jambon persillé, thin apple tart. €32 menu. 22 rue du Faubourg-Madeleine.

3:30 pm, departure

Direct TGV 4:32 pm → Paris 6:40 pm. Take the 6:32 pm train if you want a last drink at the Athenaeum before leaving. Avoid the 2:32 pm train: you miss lunch.

Detailed budget (per person)

Paris ↔ Beaune train: €79 return in Prem’s (book 3 weeks ahead).
3★ hotel (2 nights): €145.
Dinners × 2 + lunches × 2: €135.
Hospices + mustard mill + belfry entries: €29.
Cellar tastings (× 2): €40.
Miscellaneous (coffee, bike, market, souvenirs): €55.
Total: about €483 per person, or €310 by sleeping at La Villa Fleurie and dropping the Grands Crus loop.

Possible variants

In three days: add on Monday Château du Clos de Vougeot + Nuits-Saint-Georges (allow €30 of extra train fare).
For two + a child (8-12 years): replace Ma Cuisine with Le Bistrot Bourguignon (children’s menu €14), add Ludo-parc de Cîteaux (15 min by car).
In winter: aim for late November for the Hospices wine auction (watch the prices), or December for the Christmas market.
