Accommodation in the Morvan:gîtes, huts and campsites

Where to stay in the Morvan park: country gîtes, hiking huts, campsites, guest rooms. Prices, seasonal opening, booking in the core zone.

7 min readUpdated August 2026

In short: the Parc naturel régional du Morvan offers more than a hundred classified rural gîtes, around twenty campsites, some fifteen refuges and stopover gîtes, and several chambres d’hôtes. Prices are among the lowest in Côte-d’Or: a 4-person gîte starts at €350 a week, a campsite pitch €15 to €30 a night, a manned refuge €25 to €35 per person half board. The core zone of the International Dark Sky Reserve (RICE), labelled in May 2025, requires near-zero lighting after 10 p.m., a factor to weigh when choosing where to sleep.

The Morvan, Burgundy’s only mid-mountain massif, peaks at 901 metres at Haut-Folin. Its territory, roughly 2,900 km², spans Côte-d’Or, Nièvre, Yonne and Saône-et-Loire. The Côte-d’Or portion covers the eastern massif, around Saulieu, the Cousin valley and Lac de Chamboux. Accommodation is shaped by rural, forested character: no large hotel, no international chain, but a scattered offer of small independent properties, often wood-heated and opening onto preserved nature.

Morvan rural gîtes: comfort in the quiet

Gîtes de France and Clévacances in the massif

The Morvan has more than a hundred classified rural gîtes (Gîtes de France and Clévacances) on its Côte-d’Or side. Unlike vineyard gîtes, often in village houses, Morvan gîtes are mostly in isolated settings: former farm buildings, forest houses, traditional Morvan bordes (farmsteads) in woodland or beside a lake.

Average price for a 4-person gîte in low season is €350 to €700 a week. In high season (July–August), rates rise to €500–900. Typical maximum capacity is 6 to 8 people, but a few large converted farms can take 12 to 15.

Morvan gîtes are distinctive for self-sufficiency equipment: most have a fitted kitchen, wood stove or insert (essential in shoulder season), and enclosed garden or grounds. Electric heating is not always enough in stone buildings, and firewood is often provided by the owner. This matters in April as in October: Morvan nights are cool even in summer, with temperatures regularly below 10 °C between May and September.

Gîtes around the lakes

Morvan lakes are the main accommodation magnets. Lac de Pannecière (520 hectares, the largest) and Lac de Saint-Agnan on the Nièvre side are the most touristy. On the Côte-d’Or side, Lac de Chamboux (about 75 hectares) and Lac de Pont-et-Massène are quieter and less crowded.

Lakeside gîtes are the most in-demand and are often booked months ahead for July–August. Prices are 10 to 20% higher than inland massif gîtes, for direct water views and immediate access to water sports (sailing, canoe, supervised swimming).

Stopover and group gîtes

For walkers and groups, stopover gîtes line the Morvan’s marked trails. GR 13 crosses the massif north to south, and the GRP Tour du Morvan loops it in 230 km or so. Stopover gîtes are collective accommodation, with 4 to 12-bed dormitories, shared kitchen and sometimes half-board service.

These gîtes are not classified in épis but hold a specific approval from the regional natural park or the Fédération Française de Randonnée. Price per person in dormitory is €15 to €20 a night; half board (dinner + breakfast + night) around €35 to €45. Most are open May to September, sometimes by reservation only outside that period.

Refuges: for hikers and stargazers

Manned and unmanned refuges

The Morvan has half a dozen manned refuges, open May to September, offering dormitory accommodation, a hot evening meal and breakfast. They sit on marked hiking routes and are reachable on foot only. Half-board costs €25 to €35 per person.

Some ten unmanned refuges across the massif are open year-round but with no services. They provide a roof, beds (sometimes without mattresses) and a water point. Bring your sleeping bag, food and stove. The night is free or charged €5 to €10 for upkeep. These refuges suit self-sufficient walkers and stargazers who want to sleep as close as possible to the RICE core zone.

The International Dark Sky Reserve (RICE)

The Parc naturel régional du Morvan received International Dark Sky Reserve status on 21 May 2025, awarded by DarkSky International. The labelled zone covers 50 communes, including 16 in the core zone where 99.8% of public lighting is switched off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Zenith luminance reaches 21.6 mag/arcsec², placing the Morvan among Europe’s best sites for astronomy.

Sleeping in the core zone changes the night experience. Accommodation in these communes (around Planchez, Gouloux, Moux-en-Morvan, Alligny-en-Morvan) follows a strict lighting charter: motion-sensor exterior lamps, red or amber lighting, blackout blinds in bedrooms whose windows face outside so as not to spill light. Gîtes and campsites in this zone often provide star charts, astronomy binoculars and reclining chairs for observation nights.

Choosing accommodation here means accepting total darkness at night. Village streets are unlit, and walking after 10 p.m. requires a red-light head torch. In return, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on almost every moonless night, a sight nowhere else in Burgundy.

Morvan campsites

Rated campsites and natural areas

The Morvan has around twenty campsites on its Côte-d’Or side, half of them 2 or 3-star rated. Three-star campsites offer tent and caravan pitches, rental mobile homes, a pool and heated sanitary blocks. A tent pitch costs €15 to €25 a night for two people; a mobile home €300 to €600 a week depending on season.

Natural camping areas, around ten on the territory, are small unclassified sites (fewer than 20 pitches), with basic sanitary facilities but often a more preserved setting. Price is €8 to €12 a night, without electricity or services. They suit self-sufficient campers and cycle tourists.

Wild camping and bivouacking

Bivouacking is tolerated in the Morvan park, subject to a few rules: set up after 7 p.m. and leave before 9 a.m., no fires outside designated areas, camp more than 100 metres from water and more than a kilometre from a listed site. In the RICE core zone, bivouacking is possible but subject to the same darkness constraints: no white light, no noise after 10 p.m. It is the most economical and immersive option, but requires suitable kit (light tent, warm sleeping bag, stove, red lamp) and reasonable fitness.

Morvan chambres d’hôtes

In market towns and hamlets

Morvan chambres d’hôtes are fewer than gîtes, with around 30 to 40 addresses on the Côte-d’Or part of the park. They are often in market towns (Saulieu, Liernais, Précy-sous-Thil) or isolated hamlets. Average price is €65 to €90 a night for a double room, breakfast included, 20 to 30% cheaper than Beaune or Dijon.

Owners often combine several activities: farmer, artist, craftsperson or nature guide. Breakfast highlights local products: Morvan honey, homemade jam, goat’s cheese from nearby farms, wood-fired bread. Table d’hôte (dinner) is offered at some addresses, around €25 to €35 per person, with terroir produce and traditional Morvan recipes.

Château de Chastellux: the heritage exception

Château de Chastellux, 15 km south of Avallon (Yonne), is a medieval fortress remodelled in the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, lived in by the same family since 1080, making it one of France’s oldest châteaux still occupied by its original owners. It does not offer chambres d’hôtes: the château can be visited during its summer openings, and you sleep in the gîtes and chambres d’hôtes of the surrounding villages.

Prices and seasonality

The Morvan has a tighter tourist season than the rest of Côte-d’Or. High season is limited to July and August, sometimes the first half of September. Outside that period, prices drop 20 to 40%, and half the campsites close. Gîtes stay open year-round, but some owners may reduce services in low season.

February school holidays (cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Haut-Folin) and All Saints’ weekend (autumn colours) are micro-seasons when visitor numbers rise without reaching summer levels.

The Morvan offers the best value in Côte-d’Or: for the price of a 3-star Beaune hotel night in low season (€100–140), you can rent a 4-person gîte for a night or two nights in a manned refuge dormitory with meals.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book Morvan accommodation far in advance?
In high season (July–August), the best-placed rural gîtes and campsites are often booked months ahead, especially around Lac de Pannecière and Lac de Saint-Agnan. Outside that period, booking one to two weeks ahead suffices for most properties. Unmanned refuges are not bookable, but you must be self-sufficient for water and food.
Can you sleep under the stars in the Morvan dark-sky reserve?
Wild camping is tolerated in the regional natural park, provided you respect the environmental code and RICE rules: no fires, no noise after 10 p.m., take your rubbish away, and camp outside protected zones. Some gîte and campsite owners offer pitches designed for astronomy, with red-light lamps and reclining chairs.
What is the opening season for tourist accommodation in the Morvan?
Rural gîtes are open year-round, but a share of owners close between November and March. Campsites generally open from April to mid-October, with variations by star rating. Manned long-distance hiking refuges are open from May to September; unmanned refuges year-round but with no services. Always check exact dates with each property.
