A karst resurgence with turquoise water in Châtillon-sur-Seine: a walk around the Douix, a Vauclusian spring in the heart of the Châtillonnais.

5 min readUpdated July 2026

In brief: the Etang de la Douix is a karst resurgence with turquoise waters nestled in a shady park in the heart of Chatillon-sur-Seine. Fed by the Vaucluse-type exsurgence of the Douix, this pond offers a refreshing walk just steps from the town centre. A classified site since 1931, it is the favourite spot for locals to cool off in summer.

On the edge of the historic centre of Chatillon-sur-Seine, the Etang de la Douix is a remarkable natural site blending geology, history and leisure. Fed by one of the most important karst springs in Burgundy, this turquoise-hued pond is nestled in a green setting where century-old trees offer their shade to visitors. Classified since 1931, it is one of the most visited natural attractions in the Chatillonnais region, a true haven of peace accessible to all free of charge.

A karst resurgence with turquoise waters

The Etang de la Douix is no ordinary body of water: it is fed by a karst exsurgence of the Vaucluse type, a natural spring that gushes from the limestone subsoil through a vertical cavity. The underground water, after a long journey through the fissures of the Chatillonnais limestone plateau, rises to the surface with a constant temperature of 10 to 12 degrees C throughout the year.

This remarkably clear water takes on a characteristic turquoise hue, due to the combination of the pond’s depth, the limestone nature of the substrate and light refraction. The bottom of the pond, though deep, remains visible in places, fascinating visitors.

The flow of the Douix varies considerably with the seasons: under normal conditions it is around 600 litres per second, but after heavy rainfall it can reach 3,000 litres per second, transforming the calm pond into an impressive torrent. This phenomenon, known as the ‘Douix flood’, is particularly spectacular.

Diver-speleologists explored the Douix underground gallery more than 200 metres upstream from the resurgence, before being stopped by rockfalls. This exploration makes the Douix one of the best-documented resurgences in Burgundy.

The shady park and waterside walk

Around the pond, a wooded park of several hectares offers an ideal setting for a stroll. The century-old trees dip their branches into the water and create a cool, relaxing atmosphere, especially pleasant on hot summer days.

A footpath runs all the way around the pond, with several viewing points overlooking the resurgence and its surroundings. Benches are scattered along the route, inviting contemplation. Several picnic tables are available in the park, in the shade of the trees.

The Douix park is also a place for family walks: children can watch the ducks, swans and moorhens that populate the pond, while photography enthusiasts capture the ever-changing reflections of the turquoise water.

The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility over most of the path, and entry is free and open all year round. The park is carefully maintained by the town of Chatillon-sur-Seine.

The Vaucluse spring of the Douix

The Douix is classified as a Vaucluse spring, a category of karst resurgence characterised by a vertical descending orifice in the limestone massif, similar to the Fontaine de Vaucluse in Provence which gave its name to this type of spring.

Unlike a simple spring that emerges from a superficial water table, the Douix captures the waters of a vast underground network of fissures and cavities carved into the Upper Jurassic limestone that forms the Chatillonnais plateau. This network extends for several kilometres around Chatillon and collects rainwater that seeps into the karstic soil.

The Douix site is part of a series of resurgences that line the Seine valley upstream of Chatillon. The most famous among them is the Source of the Seine, located about fifteen kilometres upstream, which marks the official start of the river.

The water of the Douix joins the Seine just a few hundred metres from the resurgence, contributing significantly to the flow of the nascent river, especially in summer when other tributaries run dry.

For the inhabitants of Chatillon-sur-Seine, the Etang de la Douix is much more than a tourist attraction: it is the city’s green lung, the place where people come for a Sunday stroll, a morning jog or simply to sit on a bench and read by the water.

The park is especially popular in spring and summer, when fine weather invites outdoor activities. Anglers also appreciate the site: the pond is well stocked with carp, roach and pike. Fishing is regulated and requires a fishing licence.

The municipal washhouse located below the park, fed by the waters of the Douix, is a vestige of the past that recalls the importance of the spring in daily life before the arrival of running water. Restored, it forms part of the hydraulic heritage of the town.

The Etang de la Douix is also a biodiversity refuge in an urban setting. The wooded surroundings and water quality attract many species of birds, dragonflies and fish. In autumn, the colours of the trees reflected in the turquoise water offer a magnificent spectacle. In winter, when the temperature drops below that of the water, a natural mist forms above the pond, creating a mysterious atmosphere that draws photographers.
